Loy Krathong

We missed Songkran ( Water festival ) in Chiang Mai by a week. But they made it up to us by providing us the thrill of our very own Low Kratong. (River Floating Lantern )It's pronounced "gra-tong". Does it pacify the water spirits...and take all the wongdoings away? Mine kinda sank after two seconds afloat...so I 'm allowed to be crabby some days. Better luck next year I guess.

That night was a gorgeous gorgeous warm evening. There was a slight breeze and we had lit about 30 lanterns and they studded the black night like little torches. You could almost sense a little magic lurking in the air. Posted by Picasa

My village has a Duck Race this time of year. We all rent little plastic ducks with numbers painted on their bottoms. Then we release them down the river and try to follow our own ducks down the banks.

The first one to make it down to the end of the 3 kilometer course wins its temporary owner a small prize. The rest of the money goes to charity.

A fun day out in spring sunshine for all the family.
